As arguably one of the most recognizable sports franchises on the face of the planet, the logo for Los Angeles Dodgers has played an important role in developing its brand. The team started its illustrious journey in Brooklyn way back in 1899.
It was not until 1958 that the now infamous Dodgers script was introduced into the mix. All told, the Dodgers logo has undergone 18 different revisions since the late 1800s, although many of those were minor tweaks. Here is a brief history to bring you up to date.
Here are all the Dodgers Logos:
The Brooklyn Superbas Logo from 1899-1910
The early logos reflected a capital B in various colors and fonts to represent the teams home in Brooklyn. The early edition was a Superbas logo that featured the B in Old English style. It was red. During the 1902 season, this would change to a blue color, while the font choice remained the same.
The logo would stay this way until the 1909 season when for one year only the Blue B would become lighter and must more pronounced in a Bruce Double Pica font. The 2010 season would see the logo change again to be the iconic Blue B inside of a blue baseball diamond.
Brooklyn Dodgers Logos from 1911-1927
The team would introduce four different logos from 1911 to 1927. The one in 2011 would be the same as 1910, with the team name changing to the Brooklyn Trolley Dodgers. In 1912, the blue diamond for the baseball field would be connected, instead of having interchanging lines. The 1914 to 1925 logos got rid of the baseball diamond all together, while the 1926 logo would bring the diamond back to reflect the same logo used in 1912.
Team Logos From 1928-1931
This is was an interesting period in logo history, as the team would introduce a new one with each passing year. The 1928 version got rid of the blue baseball diamond again and replaced it with a blue circle. The 1929 version got rid of the circle and the ‘B’ became sky blue with a red border. The B would change again in 1930 and become red with dark blue trim. Finally, the 1931 logo was a B in block letter format and in a powder blue color.
Los Angeles Dodgers Logo From 1958-1967
After a few more logo changes in Brooklyn, the team would move to Los Angeles. It largely kept the existing Dodgers script logo in place, but the blue color was much more pronounced. The iconic red baseball with streaks moving down through the ‘Dodgers’ is still in place.
Los Angeles Dodgers Logo from 1968-1971
The 1968 season would see the Dodgers script on the logo become a bold shade of blue in a much thicker font. The shooting red baseball with a tail that extended below the word mark itself is still present.
Los Angeles Dodgers Logo from 1972-1978
You have to look really close at the logo change in 1972, but there is a subtle difference. The Dodgers script is still in blue, with the same red baseball streaks. The difference here is that the font choice is once again made thicker.
Los Angeles Dodgers Logo from 1979-2011
This particular change has a longer version of the Dodgers script. You will notice that the blue is a bit lighter and not as thick as previous logos from the last two decades. In addition, the streaks shooting down from the baseball have been lengthened ever so slightly.
Los Angeles Dodgers Logo from 2012-Today
This is the latest version of the logo that is still in use today. The baseball itself is a bit thicker, and so are the lines shooting off from it. The red color is a bit bolder and noticeable. The ‘O’ in Dodgers no longer has a tail on the left bottom of the letter. This makes the word appear much cleaner. There are no disjointed characters in this logo.
Take a look through the history of the Dodgers and discover what logos you like. You might just be able to go back in time and find merchandise that reflects your love of the team through the ages. The logo truly does make this team, as it is the reason so many around the world recognize and love (or hate as the case may be) the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team.
