Two fires collectively burning over 15,400 acres in Boise National Forest

One lightning-caused fire has burned over 12,000 acres as of Monday in the Boise National Forest.

The Buck Fire has burned 12,049 acres and is six percent contained. The fire is about 11 miles south of Yellow Pine. It burned over 6,000 acres overnight.

The fire started August 26 during a storm that swept through southern and central Idaho.

Two helicopters, 7 engines, three crews, and 97 people are responding to the Buck Fire.

A second fire has burned over 3,367 acres about six miles northeast of Pine. Labeled the Grouse Fire, it is zero percent contained and the cause is under investigation.

The Sawtooth National Forest said Campgrounds Abbot, Chaparral, Bird Creek, Shake Creek, Baumgartner, and all dispersed sites are closed. Boise National Forest Elks Flat Campground is still open.

Firefighters assisted by heavy equipment will continue to hold and secure the fireline and mop up in the northwest area of the fire.

Ten engines, three helicopters, five bulldozers, one air attack, four water tenders, and six 20-person crews are responding to the fire.

Together, the fires have burned over 15,400 acres in the national forest.
